This Friday, January 13th, 2017 at 7:30 PM the NAHL Lone Star Brahmas are honoring the late Justin Kinnunen by formally retiring his number (13) in a pre-game ceremony at the NYTEX Sports Centre.
The Brahmas and NYTEX Sports are inviting ALL Youth hockey players out to the game for FREE (provided the youth players are wearing their jerseys). JUSTIN PLAYED IN THE NORTH AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE FOR THE SOO INDIANS BEFORE EMBARKING ON A SUCCESSFUL FOUR YEARS WITH NORTHERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY. UPON COMPLETING COLLEGE JUSTIN TURNED PRO, SPENDING THE FIRST FOUR YEARS OF HIS PRO CAREER WITH VARIOUS TEAMS IN NORTH AMERICA AND EUROPE BEFORE SIGNING WITH THE TEXAS BRAHMAS OF THE CENTRAL HOCKEY LEAGUE IN 2007. JUSTIN WAS A PIVOTAL MEMBER OF THE TEXAS BRAHMAS HELPING TAKE THE TEAM TO GAME SEVEN OF THE LEAGUE SEMI FINALS IN HIS FIRST YEAR, AND WINNING THE CUP IN HIS SECOND YEAR WITH THE TEAM.
ALL TOLD JUSTIN PLAYED 198 GAMES WITH THE BRAHMAS TALLYING 41 GOALS AND 89 ASSISTS AS A DEFENSEMAN. ALSO DURING HIS TIME WITH THE BRAHMAS HE WAS TWICE CALLED UP TO THE SAN ANTONIO RAMPAGE OF THE AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE. JUSTIN RETIRED FROM HOCKEY UPON COMPLETION OF THE 2009-2010 SEASON TO PURSUE A CAREER IN AVIATION.
HE ACHIEVED HIS GOAL OF BECOMING A PILOT WITH AMERICAN EAGLE AIRLINES UPON COMPLETION OF ALL HIS AVIATION TRAINING REQUIREMENTS. JUSTIN'S LIFE WAS TRAGICALLY CUT SHORT LAST YEAR, AND AS A TRIBUTE TO HIS LEGACY THE BRAHMAS ARE NOW FORMALLY RETIRING THE #13.
